General synthesis of hoop-shaped ?-conjugated molecules
Synthesis of cycloparaphenylenes from a square-shaped tetranuclear platinum complexes

A new synthetic method to cycloparaphenylenes, which are the simplest structural unit of armchair carbon nanotubes, has been developed. The method allows the synthesis of several cycloparaphenylenes including 8 cycloparaphenylene [fig1], which is the smallest cycloparaphenylene derivative synthesized to date, by way of square shaped tetranuclear biaryl-platinum complexes. Cycloparaphenylenes shows different fluorescence depending on the ring size [fig2] and provides new fundamental skeletons of organic electro-luminescent materials.
