Novel Peptide Creates Exceptional
Yeast Peptide Screening Yields Novel Cell-Surface Peptide that Confers Acid Tolerance

Researchers generated yeast with modified cell walls by displaying combinatorial random peptides on the yeast cell surface.  Screening produced a novel peptide, Scr35, that conferred yeast with exceptional acid tolerance.  Yeast expressing Scr35 were able to grow well in both acidic and low glucose conditions, and showed high glucose uptake activity.  Growth of the modified yeast was less vigorous as extracellular pH increased, unless the glucose concentration in a medium was lowered.
