Green Rice Leafhopper Resistance Gene
Grh5 Gene is Capable of Confering Insect Resistance to Rice Plants

Green rice leafhoppers such as Nephotettix cincticeps are notorious pests of cultivated rice, and act as a vector for numerous viruses and mycoplasmas that affect these crops (e.g., the pathogen for dwarf disease).
The inventors have successfully isolated and characterized a gene that confers green rice leafhopper resistance (Grh5).
Rice plants expressing Grh5 show very high resistance to the green rice leafhopper (see Figure).   In addition to rice plants, this gene can also confer similar resistance to other dicotyledons.
